Say Their Names

Project Say Their Names: The Digital Archive of Freedom’s Fallen

The Cycle of Repression & The Policy of Erasure In recent decades, Iranian society has repeatedly faced a recurring cycle of popular protests followed by bloody repression. However, the crimes of the Islamic Republic do not end with shootings in the streets; for years, this regime has pursued a systematic policy of “erasing collective memory.” Refusing to release the bodies of victims to their families, conducting secret security burials at night, and destroying grave markers are all components of a single strategy: an attempt to destroy evidence of the crime, conceal the scale of the massacre, and deprive survivors of their right to mourn.

Our Mission Project Say Their Names is a documented, practical response to this strategy of erasure. Our primary objective is to aggregate, verify, and consolidate information regarding all victims from various cycles of protests into a single, unified platform. We aim to organize the data currently scattered across the web and ensure that the name and history of every individual is recorded as undeniable historical evidence. In subsequent steps, our focus will expand beyond “registering names” to “documenting narratives.” We strive to preserve the human identity of the victims against their reduction to mere statistics by collecting testimonies and life stories.

After a prolonged struggle to retrieve her remains, security forces surrounded the family home and prohibited a burial in their hometown. Sources also reported that security forces pressured the family to declare his death an “accident,” to avoid holding any funeral or public ceremony, and to bury him quietly. The family has additionally faced threats and financial pressure to remain silent and not speak to the media.

According to previous reports, Taha Safari was shot directly by security forces during the Azna protests. His body was then taken by security agents, and his family was informed of his death days later.

He was shot on the evening of January 1, 2026, during protests in front of Azna's central police station and Jihad Boulevard. Reports state he was struck by two bullets—one to the head and another to his side/torso—fired from the roof of the police station.

Following the shooting, he was transferred to the intensive care unit of Valian Hospital in Aligudarz. During his hospitalization, the facility was under heavy security; his mother was only permitted a brief visit after repeated insistence, while other family members were barred from seeing him.

After his death, security agencies pressured the family to falsely declare him a member of the Basij or to claim he died in a car accident. His body was eventually buried at 4:00 AM on January 6, 2026, in the village of Dowlatabad under strict security measures. Security forces restricted the funeral to only two family members and reportedly prohibited his mother from attending the burial.

Reza was the eldest of four brothers and worked as an apprentice in an auto body repair and paint shop to support his family's livelihood after leaving school in the 8th or 9th grade. He was an avid wrestling fan and was described by those close to him as a courageous "Pahlavan" (hero).
